What are alcohol wipes?

Alcohol wipes are disposable cloths saturated with an isopropyl alcohol-based solution and mixed with deionized water. These wipes are commonly used to disinfect surfaces but are also used by individuals to clean their hands. Saturated wipes are convenient and easy to use on the go. Alcohol is a common solvent because it can disrupt the cell membranes of microorganisms, effectively killing most in 30 seconds. According to infection control research by Dr. Butz, ethyl alcohol-impregnated hand wipes reduced bacterial counts on hands to similar levels as those who used liquid soups. The study also found a reduction in skin irritation for healthcare practitioners that used alcohol wipes rather than liquid soaps.

How do you make alcohol wipes?

Alcohol wipes are commonly saturated in isopropyl or ethyl-based solutions. If you want to make your own at home, take a reusable cloth, such as a microfiber wipe, and soak it in an isopropyl alcohol solution. It would be best to combine at least six parts alcohol with four parts water to have an effective disinfectant.
