Using Tacky Mats and Adhesive Rollers

What are tacky mats used for?

Tacky mats, also called sticky mats or adhesive mats, trap dust and dirt from shoes and cart wheels before it is tracked into a cleanroom, lab or other clean area. Place them at cleanroom doors and in the gowning or staging area. Choose a mat long enough that each foot lands on it as people walk through; a short mat works only as a doormat.

How do you install a tacky mat?

Clean the floor. Remove old adhesive and dirt, then wipe the floor with isopropyl alcohol, for example 70% IPA presaturated wipes, and let it dry.

Position the mat. Run the long side in the direction people walk so they take at least one step on it with each foot.

Stick it down. Peel off the backing and press the mat firmly to the floor, working out any air bubbles with steady pressure.

Remove the protective film. The top layer is a protective film; peel it off to expose the first adhesive sheet.

When should you change the sheet?

Peel off the top sheet when it looks soiled or stops picking up dirt, or on the schedule your SOP sets. Pull the numbered tab slowly and roll the sheet inward so the dirty side is trapped inside, then dispose of it. The numbers show how many sheets are left: CLEANtack mats have 30 sheets, and EnviroTack mats come with 30 or 60.

What are adhesive rollers?

Adhesive (tacky) rollers work like a paint roller with a roll of sticky polyethylene sheets. Roll them over smooth surfaces such as floors, walls, ceilings and workstations to lift particles, then tear off the used sheet. Each roll has 118 sheets; choose a 9 in. or 18 in. roll and a matching handle. For spills and wet cleaning, see cleanroom wipes and cleanroom mops.
