How to Choose Wipes for Remediation and Cleanup Work

Start with what needs to be removed and the surface being cleaned. Remediation and restoration work can involve water, dirt, grease, residue, adhesives, cleaners, and other jobsite soils, while different tasks may range from light wipe-downs to heavier scrubbing and surface preparation. Compare the wipe’s material, strength, absorbency, texture, lint characteristics, and compatibility with the cleaning process before selecting an option.

Dry Wipes vs. Premoistened Wipes

Dry industrial wipes and shop towels can be used alone for absorbing liquids or paired with an appropriate cleaner or solvent when the product specifications allow it. Premoistened wipes provide a ready-to-use cleaning solution for specific tasks. Review the ingredients, intended surfaces, and manufacturer instructions for premoistened products rather than assuming every wet wipe is suitable for the same soils or materials.

Match Wipe Strength to the Task

The products in this assortment range from general-purpose cleaning cloths to medium- and heavy-duty industrial wipes. Lighter tasks may prioritize flexibility and absorbency, while scrubbing, equipment cleaning, rough surfaces, or repeated wiping may require greater wet strength and durability. Compare the individual product description rather than relying on product color or appearance to indicate performance.

Consider Absorbency, Texture, and Lint

Absorbency matters when picking up water, oils, cleaners, or other liquids, while textured surfaces can provide additional scrubbing action for grime and residue. Where particles or fibers left behind could interfere with the work, also review the wipe’s documented lint characteristics. A wipe described as low-lint or virtually lint-free should still be evaluated for the specific surface and process involved.

Check Compatibility with Cleaners and Solvents

Some wipes in this category are designed for use with cleaners or solvents, while others are intended primarily for general wiping and absorption. When solvent or chemical use is part of the task, verify the wipe manufacturer’s specifications along with the cleaner or solvent instructions, surface compatibility, ventilation requirements, and applicable jobsite procedures.

Compare Size, Dispensing, and Case Quantity

Wipe dimensions and packaging can affect both usability and replenishment. This assortment includes pop-up boxes, dispenser boxes, rolls, packs, and bulk case quantities. Consider the size of the surface being cleaned, where wipes will be stored or dispensed, expected usage per shift, and the number of work areas or crew members being supplied.
