How to Choose Tattoo Ointments and Glides

Start with how the product will be used in your studio. Tattoo ointments, petrolatum products, and glides can differ in formulation, ingredients, consistency, dispensing format, and manufacturer-documented use. Some products are selected for procedure support, while others are intended for skin protection or aftercare. Compare the exact product label and ingredient list with your artist workflow and client-care protocol rather than treating every ointment or glide as interchangeable.

Petrolatum and Ointment Formulas

White petrolatum and petrolatum-based ointments provide different formulation options for applicable tattoo-studio procedures and skin-care workflows. Compare the active and inactive ingredients, consistency, container format, and manufacturer directions before selecting a product. Where a product is intended for tattoo aftercare or another specific use, follow the directions provided for that exact formulation.

Compare A&D Formulations and Ingredients

A&D ointments can vary by formulation. Some products contain lanolin and additional moisturizing ingredients, while other tattoo-oriented formulas are available without lanolin. Compare the complete ingredient list, manufacturer-documented use, and client or studio preferences when choosing between formulas rather than assuming all A&D ointments are identical.

Single-Use Packets, Tubes, and Jars

Dispensing format can be an important infection-control and purchasing consideration. Single-use packets provide individually portioned product for applicable procedures, while tubes and larger jars may be better suited to studios with established dispensing protocols and higher product usage. Compare unit size, package quantity, expected appointment volume, and your procedures for preventing cross-contamination when choosing a format.

Procedure Glides and Studio Workflow

Tattoo glides and other procedure-support products should be selected according to their formulation, intended use, consistency, ingredients, and compatibility with the artist’s workflow. As with ointments, follow manufacturer directions and use dispensing practices that support the studio’s infection-control procedures.

Procedure Support vs. Tattoo Aftercare

Products used during a tattoo procedure and products supplied or recommended for aftercare do not necessarily serve the same purpose. Review the individual product’s labeling and manufacturer documentation to determine whether it is intended for procedure support, skin protection, aftercare, or another use. Avoid extending one product’s claims to other ointments or glides simply because they appear in the same category.

Coordinate Ointments and Glides With Tattoo Studio Supplies

Ointments and procedure-support products are typically used alongside other studio essentials. Browse Disposable Gloves for procedure hand protection, Studio Disposables for single-use setup supplies, and Bandages & Dressings for applicable dressing and procedure-completion needs. For workstation turnover and hygiene supplies, see Infection Control.

Plan for Studio and Repeat Purchasing

When supplying individual artists, multiple stations, apprenticeship programs, or high-volume studios, confirm preferred formulas, ingredient requirements, packet or container size, units per box or case, expected appointment volume, and replenishment frequency before ordering.

For larger or multi-product purchases, add products to a quote from their product pages, or build your shopping cart and convert it to a quote. Review the products and quantities you need, then submit your request through Harmony’s website.
