What is safety gear?

Safety gear, also known as personal protective equipment, is apparel and products worn to reduce exposure to hazards that cause injury or illness. Injury and illness may arise from contact with infectious diseases or chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes disposable gloves, safety glasses, ear muffs, hard hats, respirators, coveralls, hi-vis vests, flame-resistant apparel, and more.

All safety gear must be designed to withstand the hazards on your job site and maintained to the highest standards. Workers should not be hampered by their PPE but should seamlessly fit into their job processes. OSHA mandates employers to train their employees to properly apply their safety gear.

What are the different types of PPE?

Personal protective equipment is all clothing or garments designed to protect the wearer from injury. Hazards can be physical, chemical, or electrical. Recreational activities may benefit from using PPE, but it is most commonly found on the job to address occupational safety and health hazards. Although workplaces should aim to set administrative controls to reduce hazards, safety gear reduces the risk to an acceptable level.

PPE should not create a barrier between the user and the working environment. Ill-fitting apparel may protect the wearer from hazards, but it is not ideal because it impacts their ability to do their job effectively.
