What is enhanced visibility apparel?

High Visibility Safety Apparel, or Hi-Vis safety apparel, is a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) specifically designed to make the wearer easily visible in low-light environments. Unlike PPE, such as N95 masks, hi-vis vests, and t-shirts are intended to alert against external hazards. For instance, road workers at night wear hi-vis vests to alert oncoming traffic. The need for such apparel arises due to potential hazards like vehicles. Research has shown that hi-vis apparel effectively protects both the wearer and external parties, making it mandatory in many professions as per the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

The fit of the hi-vis apparel is crucial; it should be comfortable and not too loose to avoid exposure and contamination risks or the chance of getting caught in machinery. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) classifies safety apparel into three classes based on the nature of the work environment and potential hazards:

Class 1 garments: These are suitable for employees interacting with traffic or moving vehicles at speeds no faster than 25 mph. Examples include parking lot attendants, warehouse workers, or those retrieving items from parking lots.
Class 2 garments: Designed for workers facing aggressive weather conditions or higher risk scenarios than Class 1. Workers like forest rangers, construction workers on highways with traffic exceeding 25 mph, airport personnel, and emergency responders wear these.
Class 3 garments: These are for individuals who require high visibility due to extremely hazardous situations. This might include survey crews, towing operators, and those working in highly dangerous weather conditions.

ANSI further categorizes Hi-Vis Apparel into three types:

Type O (Off-Road): Class 1 garment requiring 217 square inches of background material and 155 square inches of reflective material.
Type R (Roadway): Class 2 or 3 garments needing 775 or 1240 square inches of background material and 201 or 310 square inches of reflective material.
Type P (Police): Class 2 or 3 garment requiring less background material than Type R but at least the same amount of reflective material.

What colors are considered high visibility?

According to ANSI/ISEA standards, hi-vis colors include fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red. Workers are given the discretion to select the color best suits their circumstances.

Enhanced visibility clothing is a category of high-visibility safety apparel that doesn't adhere to ANSI standards, but still improves the wearer's visibility. While ANSI-rated high-visibility clothing typically uses fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red colors, enhanced visibility clothing can incorporate a wider range of colors.
