What are disposable lab coats?

Disposable lab coats contrast their reusable cousins, such as esd safe lab coats made from cotton or other material. The disposable material makes it convenient to quickly protect your classroom of students or cleanroom operators with the protection they need from splashes, spills, and particulate matter. Some lab coats may be used in cleanrooms to prevent clothing material from shedding and damaging critical components. Cleanroom coveralls function similarly to lab coats but provide a much higher degree of protection.

What are disposable frocks?

Disposable frocks are similar to disposable lab coats, and some even use these terms interchangeably. Frocks are more common in medical settings and make up a popular type of medical grade PPE. In conjunction with medical gloves they can protect against the spread or infectious diseases such as the flu, ebola, and COVID-19.

Frocks generally have a snap front closure or other quick closure mechanism that securely stays snap shut to protect your clothing against liquids and bodily fluids. Thumb loops are a common feature to ensure consistent arm protection similar in function to disposable sleeves.

What is the difference between lab coats and frocks?

Lab coats and frocks serve the same purpose, and many don't distinguish between the two. Lab coats are most common in cleanrooms, research centers, pharmaceutical manufacturing and other industrial centers that benefit from having pockets and aren't dealing with infectious disease hazards.

Frocks are more common in medical settings and are frequently paired with disposable face shields for added protection. The main hazard a frock protects against are infectious liquids, splashes and spills.

Can you reuse a disposable lab coat?

A disposable lab coat should not be reworn after it has been soiled. Even if the disposable material is wiped down with Purell hand sanitizer or another disinfectant, it can negatively impact that material's strength leading to a reduction in protective power. A disposable lab coat can only provide reliable protection for a limited amount of time. The benefits of disposable coats are clear: reduce cross contamination, stop the spread of contagious diseases, reliable comfort and quality, easier to maintain, more cost effective.

Reusable lab coats are more useful when esd static control protection is needed, and there isn't a risk of spreading infectious diseases. ESD lab coats are easily washable but do not have the same protective qualities of Tyvek or polypropylene materials. If you need a lab coat to protect against medical risks then a disposable lab coat is far superior and easier to prevent cross contamination.

Can you reuse a disposable frock?

Disposable frocks should not be reworn, especially in a medical setting. When removing a disposable frock it is imperative to ensure your skin does not make contact with any infectious fluids or other potential hazards living on the surface of the frock. It is for this reason one should not reuse a disposable frock. The cost of each frock is low enough to not bother with sanitizing your ppe and reusing it.

What are disposable frocks and lab coats made from?

Disposable lab coats and frocks can be made from a variety of woven and non-woven materials but below are the five most common materials. Most lab coats have a snap front closure, knit wrists, and a knit collar. Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is spunbonded and provides basic protection from grime, dirt, and dust in medical, industrial, institutional, service, and household environments. Polypropylene (PP) is eco-friendly, breathable, soft and lightweight.

One hundred percent polypropylene is a non-woven material frequently used in disposable garments and is touted for being breathable, so you stay cool and protected. It is also known for its durability and low lint. This is a great material that can be worn in non-critical environments. Microporous frocks provide protection that is a step above a lightweight polypropylene lab coat and is useful for tasks requiring liquid and particle protection. Microporous materials are a cost-saving option to traditional, expensive Tyvek frocks & Lab Coats.

Polyethylene Coated (PE)

Polyethylene coated lab coats are made from spunbonded polypropylene and then coated with polyethylene for liquid protection. PE coated coats are good for general-purpose laboratory use, anywhere light splash protection is needed. PE provides anti-dust, anti-bacteria, fluid resistant, Reduced particulate release, water-based liquid protection along with other positive qualities found in polypropylene such as comfort and cost effectiveness.

Microporous

Microporous lab coats are made from polypropylene and then covered with a microporous film. Microporous is widely utilized in medical, industrial, institutional, and service environments where anti-bacterial or waterproof barrier protection are required. The material qualities include durability along with being lint-free, anti-dust, anti-bacterial, waterproof, breathable, and anti-static.

SMS

SMS lab coats are made from 3 layer of polypropylene that is spunbonded, meltblown, and spunbonded to create the durable 3 layer design. SMS is useful for thorough protection in medical healthcare, industrial, laboratory, institutional, sanitation, and service sectors. SMS lab coats provide limited fluid and particulate barrier but are resistant to tears and punctures. SMS is lightweight, breathable, soft, low lint, tear resistant, breathable, hypo-allergenic, waterproof.
