Does OSHA or ANSI regulate Hard Hat Accessories?

Accessories that do not affect the hard hat's material such as decals are generally accepted. Some workplaces may regulate stickers for reasons other than safety. ANSI Z89.1.2003 states that hard hats should not be painted because the process may degrade the hard hat's plastic shell. No accessory should reduce the protection level of the hard hat.

The ideal Hard Hat Accessories make your head protection more comfortable. Many find bandanas or similar cloth coverings to ease the strain on long shifts. Hard hat liners, padding, and sweatbands are other additions to assist in comfortable head protection. On hot days, bandanas or cloth coverings should be changed, or ensure your material is sweat resistant and breathable. Don't ever wear a baseball cap underneath a hard hat. If you want a baseball style hat with protection, then try a bump cap. Some face shields are compatible with hard hats or act as extensions.
