What are canned air dusters?

An air duster is a cleaning or dusting product used on electronic or other sensitive devices that cannot withstand water. Also referred to as a gas duster, canned air, or compressed air, it releases compressed gas blasts when pressed. The gas inside is compressed to the point of becoming liquid. Difluoroethane, trifluoroethane, or tetrafluoromethane are gases that are easier to compress than oxygen, making them ideal for air dusters.

Is an air duster canned air?

Air dusters contain a propellant/ refrigerant, which is not comparable to breathable air. As a result, use them in a properly ventilated space to avoid the psychoactive effects of the fumes.

Some propellants in a compressed air duster include HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane, CAS #811-97-2). This component is non-flammable, making it ideal for professional and industrial applications. It is the preferred choice when working in places with a higher possibility of sparks or flames. The only downside with HFC-134A is its Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1400 compared to carbon dioxide. The liquid boils quickly as the gas reaches room temperature. The liquid cools to its boiling point. When used correctly, this vapor cools whatever you spray the liquid on (condensing water in the air and freezing it).
