What is eye wash?

Eye wash is a fluid solution to rinse, cleanse, or irrigate the eyes. It's often used in exposure to harmful substances, dust, debris, or irritants to help alleviate discomfort and potentially prevent eye damage.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) addresses the requirements for Emergency Eyewash Stations. OSHA has a standard in 29 CFR 1910.151(c) that states if an employer is exposed to toxic, corrosive materials, then it is the employer's responsibility to provide a station for flushing out the chemicals from the eyes and body, and the station must be available for immediate use.

Because OSHA requirements are only a federal regulation, the ANSI standard is most useful for employers in various industries such as research, biotech, chemistry labs, industrial manufacturing, and critical environments.

How is eye wash used?

Eyewash stations are used in workplace environments where potential irritants could lead to eye injuries. Research laboratories, production facilities, and medical environments must have eyewash stations in place by law. While designed to keep workers safe, they could pose serious health risks if maintained improperly. According to OSHA, eyewash stations that aren’t regularly maintained could contain potentially dangerous organisms.

Eye wash is applied with an eye wash dispenser or directly from an eye wash station. The solution is used for flushing the eyes, removing any irritants. The process should be done quickly after exposure to a harmful substance.

When should I use eye wash?

Eyewash should be used whenever exposure to harmful substances, dust, or debris might harm the eyes. It's commonly used in industrial environments, laboratories, or anywhere that work with potentially eye-irritating materials.

Can I use water instead of eye wash?

While water can be used in emergencies, eyewash solutions are specially formulated to be gentle on the eyes. They are often isotonic, meaning they have the same salt concentration as your tears. This makes eyewash more comfortable and potentially more effective at removing irritants.

Does eyewash saline solution expire?

One of the most important factors to remember is that the saline solution they contain does have an expiration date. Some have 24-month shelf lives. Others can be stored safely for up to 36 months. The expiration date will vary from one type of solution to the next.

The ideal way to provide employees with an eye solution is to simply have a small emergency eyewash wall station in place.
